The Dragon’s Tale & Chinese Fishing

Materials from the San Diego Chinese Historical Society

October 31– December 28, 2023

The SDCHM presents artifacts that represent Chinese history, art, and culture, and which also tell the stories of Chinese American experiences. These include selections of fine art, folk art, decorative arts, clothing, household and commercial goods, archeological finds, and mementos of the Chinese community of San Diego.

Dragon imagery is ubiquitous in the San Diego Chinese Historical Museum’s collection. The mythical creatures appear on many different types of artifacts, ranging from flags and tapestries to clothing and jewelry to funerary jars. The Dragon’s Tale explores the symbolism of the dragon in Chinese culture through these very artifacts.

Chinese Fishing consists of 5 didactics detailing the importance of the Chinese fishing industry as the Chinese history of San Diego including 3 pictures of San Diego harbor and a model fishing boat
