The Sum of Us: an evening with Heather McGhee | Streaming at Central

San Diego Public Library and University of San Diego Copley Library are teaming up once more to bring to the City our annual Black History Month lecture series. We'll be having a watch party streaming The Sum of Us: an evening with Heather McGhee Virtual Event at Central Library for people to view together.

Heather McGhee's specialty is the American economy—and the mystery of why it often fails the American public. Join us for a thought-provoking evening as McGhee discusses the ramifications of racism and the ripple effect it has for everyone, not just people of color. She will address themes from her book The Sum of Us: How Racism Costs Everyone and How We Can Prosper Together. Learn how we as a people can move away from the idea that progress for some must come at the expense of others and how we can achieve great things working with one another.

The former president of the inequality-focused think tank Demos, McGhee has drafted legislation, testified before Congress, and contributed regularly to news shows including NBC’s Meet the Press. She now chairs the board of Color of Change, the nation’s largest online racial justice organization. McGhee holds a BA in American studies from Yale University and a JD from the University of California, Berkeley, School of Law.

Free copies of The Sum of Us will be available for attendees of the premiere, while supplies last, as part of our Books for Good Trouble: Social Justice Dialogues programming series. Copies of the book will also be available for checkout at SDPL and can be purchased from the Library Shop. All proceeds support San Diego Public Library.
