11th Annual Banned Books Read-a-thon

Commemorate Banned Books Week (September 18 - 24) with San Diego Public Library’s 11th Annual Read-a-thon! A new book and a new reader every 10 - 15 minutes.

During BBW 2022, join us for an entertaining yet bittersweet good time of forbidden knowledge in books censored in the country. Librarians will perform live readings from selected books marked with the scarlet letter of censorship.

And while you’re here, you are also invited to attend at 6:30pm a Picture This! screening of a film adapted from a banned or challenged book.

About Banned Books Week

Banned Books Week’s objective is to raise awareness regarding the censorship of books in the country. According to the American Library Association, more than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982.

Typically held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read and spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. It brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
