San Diego welcomes new California Poet Laureate, Lee Herrick, for Kowit Awards and National Poetry Month!



Together with SD Poetry Annual, SD Writers Festival and Library Foundation SD, we proudly present an evening of inspiration and celebration in honor of San Diego’s vibrant poetry community and seminal poet, Steve Kowit. Featured speaker and California’s newest Poet Laureate, Lee Herrick, will be joined by San Diego Poet Laureate, Jason Magabo Perez and local poets of note including 2023 Kowit Award winner Julia LevineRon SalisburyJeff WaltGill Sotu, and more.

Enjoy scrumptious refreshments, a mini-book fair, and, of course, poetry, as we bring together San Diego’s diverse literary arts organizations, cultural leaders, and supporters in joyful celebration. Open-mic afterparty hosted by Poets Underground. Key event organizers and supporters of this event include Write Out LoudSan Diego Writers, Ink, and Friends of SD Public Library.


The Kowit Poetry Award is given annually to deserving poets anywhere in honor of the celebrated late San Diego poet Steve Kowit. An award ceremony, including cash awards, honoring the winners takes place every year. Kowit honorees' poems are published in a special section of the San Diego Poetry Annual.
