In Recognition of Native American History Month
San Diego Public Library's Special Collections is taking an iconic photography collection out from our archives for the public to view up close. Featuring Native Americans from a variety of tribes across the country, The North American Indian is a set of 20 volumes filled with hundreds of photographs taken by Edward S. Curtis. It was a project that took decades to complete.
Published from 1907-1930, these volumes captured Native Americans in a romantic light, with a lifestyle that, for many Native Americans, had already crumbled away due to forced education, banning cultural practices and stripping away tribal lands. Learn more about Curtis' goals with this undertaking.
Registered participants will be given the opportunity to spend an hour looking through SDPL's 20 volume book set and the 20 folio set of original photographs.
Limited space: Registration required. 20 registrants for the top of each hour: 12:00 p.m., 1:00 p.m., 2:00 p.m., or 3:00 p.m.
