Program Description

Event Details

Meet artist Manuel Dickey and view his new exhibit. He explores the internal landscape of mental illness and the profound personal work required to rebuild one’s sense of self. The three canvases form a psychological map—moving from fragmentation, to confrontation, to a renewed grounding in identity.

The dripped surfaces evoke emotional overflow, while the layered images, torn textures, and altered faces speak to dissociation, memory distortion, and the struggle to remain present during periods of crisis. Each painting holds traces of breakdown and breakthrough.

Created during the artist’s path toward sobriety and sustained mental health care, the work reflects the transformation that became possible through persistence and community support—especially within the San Diego mental-health network that played an essential role in his recovery.

Together, the panels show a story not of despair, but of reclamation. They honor the truth that healing is neither linear nor quiet, and that from the most chaotic inner spaces, new clarity—and new art—can emerge.
