Author Monique Morris: "Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools"

Why are Black girls disproportionally pushed out of schools?

Join us to hear from Dr. Monique Morris and then engage in a thought-provoking discussion about the over-policing, disciplining and criminalization of Black girls. A scholar on civil rights, education and social-justice, Dr. Morris will be discussing her book, Pushout: The Criminalization of Black Girls in Schools.

Pushout chronicles the racial and gender experiences of Black girls across the country whose lives are misunderstood, highly judged - by teachers, administrators, and the justice system - and degraded by the very institutions charged with helping them to flourish. Dr. Morris exposes a world of confined potential that pushes Black girls out of school and into unhealthy, unstable, and unsafe futures.

Dr. Morris an award-winning author and social justice scholar with three decades of experience in the areas of education, civil rights, juvenile and social justice. Dr. Morris is the author of the forthcoming book, Sing A Rhythm, Dance A Blues which explores a pedagogy to counter the criminalization of Black and Brown girls in schools. She is also the author of Black Stats: African Americans by the Numbers in the Twenty-First Century, Too Beautiful for Words, and worked with Kemba Smith on her book, Poster Child: The Kemba Smith Story. Dr. Morris has written dozens of articles, book chapters, and other publications on social justice issues and lectured widely on research, policies, and practices associated with improving juvenile justice, educational, and socioeconomic conditions for Black girls, women, and their families. Dr. Morris was a 2018 TED Women speaker and is an executive producer and writer for a documentary film exploring how exclusionary discipline impacts Black girls in the United States. Dr. Morris is the founder and president of the National Black Women’s Justice Institute.
