Just released in an expanded second edition, Becoming American is a memoir describing Cary Lowe’s transformation from a child of Holocaust victims in post-war Europe to an American lawyer, academic, and activist engaged with many of the most significant causes and campaigns of our time. This journey will fascinate readers dealing with questions about how refugees and other immigrants can become “real Americans.” The book won the 2020 Discovery Award for current affairs writing and was recognized as a Distinguished Favorite in the NYC Big Book Awards.
Dr. Lowe grew up in postwar Austria and Germany. He immigrated and became a US citizen in his teens, attended college and graduate school in California, and served as an officer in the US Navy. Apart from his writing, he is a recently retired land use lawyer and mediator. He holds both a law degree and a Ph.D. from the University of Southern California, and taught courses in law and urban planning at USC, UCLA, and UC San Diego.
