During Banned Books Week, join us for a risqué evening of forbidden knowledge in books censored in the US in 2017. Stage actors from Write Out Loud and Logan Squared Productions will perform live readings from selected books marked with the scarlet letter of censorship.  Join us for an entertaining evening of bacchanal revelry in the written word.  Refreshments served.

Registration encouraged, please scroll down!

Community readers are invited to read with us at the 7th annual Banned Books Read-a-thon earlier in the day.  And while you're here check out the historical banned books display on the 9th floor.

Banned Books Week’s objective is to help raise awareness regarding the censorship of books in the US. More than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982. There were 354 challenges reported in 2017.  See the most frequently challenged books and the 10 most challenged books of 2017.

Write Out Loud inspires, challenges and entertains by reading short stories aloud for a live audience.  Their core programs, including Poetry Out Loud and TwainFest, serve  over 16,000 people annually.

Logan Squared Produsctions is best known for its annual production THAT 24-HOUR THING, which also takes place at the San Diego Central Library.

This event is part of our programming for this year's One Book, One San Diego where we will explore themes of civil rights, social justice, and discrimination. The 2018 One Book selection is March: Book One by Congressman John Lewis, Andrew Aydin and Nate Powell.
