Commemorate Banned Books Week (September 26-October 2) with San Diego Public Library!
During BBW, join us for an evening of forbidden knowledge in books censored in the US in 2020. Stage actors from Write Out Loud will perform live readings from selected books marked with the scarlet letter of censorship. Join us for an entertaining evening of bacchanal revelry in the written word.
Registration encouraged. Please scroll down.
In addition to the live performance, throughout the week, library workers will share video readings our favorite excerpts from books that have been challenged or banned in the US—from children’s picture books to classics to award-winning literature.
Write Out Loud inspires, challenges and entertains by reading short stories aloud for a live audience. Their core programs, including Poetry Out Loud and TwainFest, serve over 16,000 people annually.
----------
Banned Books Week’s objective is to help raise awareness regarding the censorship of books in the country. According to the American Library Association, more than 11,300 books have been challenged since 1982.
Typically held during the last week of September, Banned Books Week celebrates the freedom to read and spotlights current and historical attempts to censor books in libraries and schools. It brings together the entire book community — librarians, booksellers, publishers, journalists, teachers, and readers of all types — in shared support of the freedom to seek and to express ideas, even those some consider unorthodox or unpopular.
