Every other week, library staff publish book reviews in the San Diego Union-Tribune sometimes followed by a video review on social media the following week.  No video this week. Instead listen to a stimulating discussion with the author on NPR's Fresh Air.

Library assistant Jay Evans reviews Caste: The Origins of Our Discontents by Isabel Wilkerson which explores how the United States today and throughout its history has been shaped by a hidden caste system, and how we can move beyond this rigid hierarchy of human rankings and divisions toward a our common humanity.

Behind the Desk is our latest video series and delves deeper into the Recommended Reads published every other Sunday in the Union-Tribune. Check the Sunday Paper to see the latest review from SDPL staff or view our archives on the library website: https://sandiego.gov/sdplreviews.

Want other suggestions for great reads? Jay has a playlist for you:

An Indigenous Peoples’ History of the United States by Roxanne Dunbar-Ortiz

Caste Matters by Suraj Yengde

The Dawning of the Apocalypse: The Roots of Slavery, White Supremacy, Settler Colonialism, and Capitalism in the Long Sixteenth Century by Gerald Horne
