Program Description

Event Details

Every other week, SDPL staff have their book reviews published in the San Diego Union Tribune followed by a video review posted on SDPL social media the following week. No Behind the Desk video this week. Instead watch scholar Philip Hoare discuss his fascination with whales and Moby Dick!

Library assistant Derek Human recommends Moby Dick by Herman Melville for its 170th anniversary and the 130th year of Melville’s passing. Everyone knows the broad strokes: whalers, obsessed captain, whale, etc. Moby-Dick lives up to its own legend by being way more relatable than you think.

Behind the Desk is our latest video series and delves deeper into the Recommended Reads published every other Sunday in the Union-Tribune. Check the Sunday Paper to see the latest review from SDPL staff from all over San Diego or view our archives on the library website: https://sandiego.gov/sdplreviews.

Want other suggestions for great reads? Derek has a bonus playlist for you:

Typee by Herman Melville

Into the Deep: America, Whaling & the World (PBS documentary film)

Blood Meridian by Cormac McCarthy
