Program Description

Event Details

San Diego Central Library joins the international Bloomsday celebrations of Irish writer, James Joyce and his great novel Ulysses with a stage reading performance of The Dead, the longest story in Joyce’s short story collection, Dubliners. Hailed as one of the very best short story collections in English, Dubliners was written in the 1900s at the heights of Irish nationalism against British colonialism.  The Dead is considered as one of the greatest short stories ever written, raising questions about the nature of Irish identity against English domination while dealing with themes of disappointed love and frustrated personal and career expectations.

Registration encouraged.  Please scroll down. Refreshments served.

Bloomsday is observed annually on June 16th, when Joyce fans from all walks of life and around the world open a book, drink an adult beverage, and relive the events in Ulysses, which take place on that single day, June 16, 1904.  Co-sponsored with Write Out Loud
