San Diego Public Library and San Diego Pride present an evening in conversation with the author-artist ALOK. This talk on gender and the social expectations, rules and false choices that stem from the concept of it being binary will be followed by a question and answer session involving San Diego Unified School District students and the audience.

We will be discussing themes involving the LGBTQ+ community, transgender experiences, and non-binary belonging, how to get involved locally and what you can do to improve the lives of gender non-conforming folks around you.

ALOK (they/them) is a gender non-conforming writer and performance artist. Their distinctive style and poetic challenge to the gender binary has been internationally renowned. As a mixed-media artist ALOK uses poetry, prose, comedy, performance, design and portraiture to explore themes of eugenics, trauma, belonging and the human condition. They are the author of “Femme in Public” (2017) and “Beyond the Gender Binary” (2020).

ASL interpretation will be provided for this program.
