Program Description

Event Details

What do tropical cyanobacteria, a sea hare, and an FDA-approved anticancer drug all have in common? Natural product scientists and medicinal chemists work together to develop new drugs and pharmaceutical leads from chemicals produced in nature, and one that reached the clinic started from a discovery made studying sea hares that eat cyanobacteria and bio-accumulate natural products. Filamentous cyanobacteria, or blue-green algae, have a primary role in ocean and environmental health through photosynthesis and nitrogen fixation, and some examples will be shown of how research on this marine life is contributing to the development of new anti-inflammatory, neuroactive, and anticancer agents for human health.
