Program Description

Event Details

The City Heights Performance Annex will host an Immersion into Japan’s raucous Matsuri puppetry traditions, Edo-era robots, and the Wonder of Fusuma Karakuri. This unplanned and serendipitous iteration of the City Heights Puppet Project is presented by Zach Dorn, who is in San Diego performing with the Fringe Festival.

Selected as one of three inaugural Julie Taymor World Theater Fellows, Dorn spent on year studying and documenting forms of Japanese traditional puppetry beyond bunraku. His training included working with 500-year-old mechanical puppets that remain one of the main attractions, used in farm-village puppet performances powered by water wheels. This presentation will explore these Japanese puppet traditions that are often overlooked in the West.
