Dr. Rodriguez learned traditional Kumeyaay knowledge, language, and culture from many Kumeyaay elders. He has spent his career leading indigenous language revitalization and revitalizing cultural knowledge by teaching in the humanities, participating in cultural exchanges, playing an active role in his community, mentoring Native students, and advocating for indigenous education and cultural preservation.

Dr. Rodriguez has been President of Kumeyaay Community College since 2018. He serves as a Council Member of the Santa Ysabel Band of the Iipay Nation. He is the developer of the accelerated language immersion program, serving as the college's Kumeyaay language instructor since 2005. He earned a M.A. in Human Behavior from National University and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership from UCSD. Governor Newsom appointed him to the California Native American Heritage Commission in 2021.

The Clara Breed Civil Liberties Lecture honors Miss Breed's triple legacy of service, decency, and advocacy on behalf of Japanese Americans wrongly imprisoned in concentration camps by the federal government during World War II. Learn more about this on our website: mysdpl.org/civilliberties
