NEW MEETING DATE: THIRD TUESDAY OF THE MONTH.

Going forward, we will now be meeting on the 3rd Tuesday of each month. Therefore, in February and March we'll convene on Tuesday the 21st for two months in a row. For those Coineers members that are Heartland Coin Club members too, please note that for this month and next we will be meeting on the Tuesday after the Heartland meeting. Beginning in April, and for most months following thereafter, our Coineers meeting will occur on the Tuesday evening prior the Heartland Coin Club in El Cajon which will meet the following night.

Last month Brent Hoag hosted our Installation Dinner. We extend our thanks to Brent for a delicious dinner, another fabulous show and tell, and an awesome private tour of his other fascinating collections. Those that didn't attend missed out on a great time and the chance to see an absolutely breathtaking and show stopping collection of classic U.S. Commemorative coins.

OUR FEBRUARY THEME: PROOF SETS.

Let's see some of your best proof coin sets. These could be from the United States or other nations. Proof sets have taken a variety of forms in the U.S. over the years. Hard packs have been the format since 1968, with those issued from 1973 to 1982 including a fold out cover that let the set stand up. Between 1955 and 1964 proof sets came in thin flimsy “flat packs” housed in paper envelopes. Earlier sets came in little plastic sleeves packaged in tiny card board boxes from which the coins were easily extracted. Early date high quality proof are worth many multiples of catalog prices as most vintage proof sets exhibit various minor impairments. Older sets featuring deeply mirrored cameo proofs with frosted devices were typically the exception rather than the rule and are actively sought and rarely found.

In addition to our member supported show-and-tells, we are looking to add a featured speaker each month that will be available to speak in depth on a particular theme, or topic of their choice. While we will be looking for guest speakers from around our local numismatic community, the invitation is also extended to

any member that might like to make a special presentation on a particular numismatic topic for a 20-30 minute duration. We would like to know in advance so we can provide our calendar to the library staff, as well as give you time to organize a presentation. In addition to the short show-and-tell presentations, having featured speakers will further enhance our mission to educate collectors about the various different aspects of the hobby. Therefore, next month we plan to have Dr. Bob Fagaly from the Oceanside/Carlsbad Coin Club make a presentation on the topic of Early American copper coinage.

For this month’s topic I think we're all aware of the special presentation set known within the hobby as the King of Siam set, featuring a proof 1804 dollar, and other classic rarities. It's probably the most famous proof set in the world and is currently owned by the privately held “Tyrant Collection” and was on display in Long Beach last year. When I saw it exactly one year ago, it was just the second time I had ever seen the set in person. The first time I laid eyes on it was at the ANA Mid Winter Convention here in San Diego at the Town and Country Hotel in March 1990, nearly 33 years ago.

We look forward to seeing your best proof sets and proof coins at the meeting this month. We
