Explore the mesmerizing world of seaweeds and kelps, the unsung eco-engineers of our near-shore ocean waters. These marine algae are the foundation of a vibrant underwater ecosystem, supporting a rich tapestry of life that often goes unnoticed. Through this exhibition, we celebrate the stories of these vital organisms, bringing their beauty and importance to the forefront.
Exhibition Highlights:
-
Eco-Engineers of the Ocean: Discover how seaweeds and kelps act as primary producers, forming the building blocks of marine ecosystems. These marine algae create habitats that support countless other organisms, contributing to the rich biodiversity of our oceans.
-
Cultural and Scientific Legacy: Trace the long history of seaweeds, from their use by Indigenous peoples for thousands of years to their study by naturalists and scientists. Learn about the 18th-century explorers who collected ocean flora, the female scientists of the 19th century who collaborated internationally to study seaweed, and the modern-day explorers who continue to uncover new species.
-
Art and Science Converge: Witness the artist’s personal journey into the world of marine algae, where a photographer’s eye meets scientific inquiry. Marvel at the diverse palette of seaweeds, from olive green to golden brown to deep purple, and their varying forms—smooth, bumpy, delicate, or magnificently simple. This exhibition reveals the hidden poetry and magic of ocean flora, a place where art and science intersect.
A New Perspective on Seaweed: In recent years, seaweed has gained attention as a potential solution to some of our ocean’s most pressing problems. Yet, despite this newfound interest, kelps and seaweeds remain unfamiliar to many. This exhibition invites visitors to look closely, with focused intent, at these remarkable organisms that thrive at the edge of the sea. Through this exploration, we aim to deepen our appreciation for the largely unseen forms of marine algae and the critical role they play in the health of our planet.
Join us in uncovering the hidden beauty of the sea’s flora and celebrating the intersection of nature, art, and science.
The Curious World of Seaweed is a traveling exhibition from author and artist Josie Iselin in partnership with Exhibit Envoy. The exhibit is based on the book of the same name by Iselin (Heyday Books).
