Join the San Diego Public Library as we celebrate Día de Los Muertos in Old Town San Diego! Visit our booth on Saturday, November 2nd, and Sunday, November 3rd, from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m., where you can discover library programs and services, and create your own calavera (sugar skull) mask, while supplies last. Plus, don’t miss our special Día de Los Muertos storytimes at 2 p.m. each day on the main stage! This is a free and family friendly event, all are welcome!

Get ready for a vibrant and unforgettable Día de Los Muertos celebration in Old Town San Diego, happening from Friday, November 1 through Sunday, November 3, 2024! This year’s event promises an experience filled with culture, tradition, and fun for the entire family.

Explore Over 40 Unique Altars (Ofrendas):
Take a stroll through the heart of Old Town and immerse yourself in the beauty of more than 40 uniquely crafted altars. Each ofrenda honors loved ones who have passed, showcasing stunning artistry and heartfelt traditions.

Family-Friendly Activities:
Head to Old Town San Diego State Historic Park, where you’ll find amazing art, hands-on activities, and educational opportunities to learn more about the rich traditions of Día de Los Muertos.

Shop for Treasures:
Explore a fabulous street market brimming with unique treasures, artisan crafts, and special keepsakes that capture the spirit of the celebration. It’s the perfect place to find one-of-a-kind items while supporting local artists.

Special Events:

  • Movie Night: On November 1, watch a free screening of the beloved film The Book of Life under the stars. It’s a magical way to kick off the festivities! Movie starts at 7 p.m.!
  • Candlelit Procession: On November 2, join our annual candlelit procession, a beautiful tradition that illuminates the streets of Old Town as we honor those who have passed.
  • Catrina Contest: Embrace the iconic imagery of Día de Los Muertos by entering the Catrina Contest. Show off your creative attire for a chance to win prizes!
