Program Description

Event Details

During this presentation by literacy therapist Elena Girling, participants will learn about the fundamental skills that support reading comprehension, i.e. decoding and language comprehension.

Elena will demonstrate examples and share resources you can use to help your children acquire the specific skills that produce strong decoding and language comprehension. Children learn to read and write at different paces, and Elena will discuss how some children may need more adult support along the way than others.

About the presenter: Literacy Therapist Elena Girling has loved stories and learning all her life. Once she learned how to read, she spent most of her free time as a kid curled up in her favorite chair with a library book. When she grew up and studied at Claremont McKenna College, she double majored in math and literature while trying to figure out how to pursue her love for problem-solving along with her love for beautiful stories. Literacy instruction was the perfect fit. For the past eight years, Elena has worked with students one-on-one to build literacy skills and help them become more independent learners. She has supported students with a variety of learning disabilities. Elena completed her master’s degree through the University of Florida with a major in special education and a certificate in dyslexia assessment and intervention. She is also certified as a Structured Literacy Dyslexia Interventionist through the Center for Effective Reading Instruction (CERI). She currently runs a literacy therapy group that provides reading and writing support and works part-time as the Literacy Specialist at a local private school.
