Event Details

Makar Sankranti, Pongal, Lohri (Festival of Kites) is a joyful festival celebrated in India as winter begins to fade and the days grow longer. It is actually three festivals combined into one. The festival usually happens around January 14th or 15th. People celebrate by flying colorful kites that paint the sky with vibrant patterns. They also make yummy sweets using sesame seeds and jaggery. This festival is also about celebrating the harvest season. Farmers are happy because their crops, like sugarcane and wheat, have grown well. It's a time for everyone to be thankful for the good food that comes from the land.

At our library, we celebrate by creating Minion kites and a doing a hands-on cooking demo for coconut ladoo, an Indian treat in the shape of a ball.
