Event Details

Celebrate LGBTQIA+ History Month with a film screening of San Diego's Gay Bar History and meet the filmmaker! This documentary traces the development of the gay bar as a community institution in San Diego, and examines the roles bars have played across three major time periods: after WWII until the birth of the modern gay rights movement in 1969; during the 1970s and until the onset of HIV in 1981; during the AIDS epidemic (1981-1995), and beyond.

Winner of the Audience Award for Best Documentary at the 2018 FilmOut San Diego LGBT film festival, the film was produced, written, and directed by Paul Detwiler.

Our special guest, Mr. Detwiler, will make remarks prior to the film and engage the audience in a short discussion.

Paul Detwiler is a professor of biology at San Diego Mesa College. His expertise is in marine biology and ecology. He specializes in marine invertebrate zoology (especially the biology of echinoderms) and in the ecology of coral reefs, kelp forests, and rocky intertidal zones. He's also knowledgeable about independent filmmaking.
