Join Professor Fatima El-Tayeb of UCSD’s Ethnic Studies Department for a discussion of the 1904-1907 Herero and Nama genocide that Germany undertook in German South West Africa (modern-day Namibia) against the Herero, Nama and San people. Considered the first genocide of the 20th century, it was a campaign of racial extermination and collective punishment to combat the anti-colonial resistance of the indigenous peoples of Southern Africa. Dr. El-Tayeb will also discuss the ongoing struggle for reparations from the German government.

Presented in conjunction with the 2017 One Book One San Diego county-wide reading campaign.
