Coming of Age in Yellowstone National Park

In the early 1970s, Dan Johnson, a college student from a conservative family in Indiana, joined his older brother, working for the summer as a bellman at Old Faithful Inn in Yellowstone National Park. The bell crew consist of 10 young men with colorful personalities from around the country. Dan’s summer quickly becomes an exciting mixture of work, socialization and adventure in the park as he experiences exhilarating, and hair-raising adventures in the wilds of Yellowstone, and with the Park’s diverse wildlife. Throughout the summer, he is challenged to re-examine his prior beliefs and practices as he experiences the “coming of age“ moment in his life.

David M. Huffman grew up in a conservative family in Indiana. While in college in law school, he worked six summers in Yellowstone National Park; five as a bellman at the Old Faithful Inn. From the mystique of living and working in the historical Inn, to exploring the majestic beauty and natural features of Yellowstone with his fellow bellman and the lasting friendships that were developed among them, he truly experienced six life changing summers in Yellowstone. David practiced law for 42 years before retiring in 2018. In the past decade, he has served as a Trustee on the Board of the Cabrillo National Monument Foundation.
