Join contributing writers Kazim Ali, Mahin Ibrahim, and Blair Imani for a book discussion of Halal If You Hear Me, a new anthology of writings by Muslim American writers from all walks of life including women, queer, nonbinary, and transgender authors.
Edited by Safia Elhillo and Fatimah Asghar, the collected poems, essays and other pieces in Halal if You Hear Me dispel the notion that there is one correct way to be a Muslim. The book will be available for signing by the authors and for sale in the Library Shop.

Kazim Ali has published several volumes of poetry including Inquisition, Sky Ward, winner of the Ohioana Book Award in Poetry; The Far Mosque, winner of Alice James Books’ New England/New York Award; The Fortieth Day; All One’s Blue; and the cross-genre text Bright Felon. His novels include The Secret Room: A String Quartet and among his books of essays are the hybrid memoir Silver Road: Essays, Maps & Calligraphies and Fasting for Ramadan: Notes from a Spiritual Practice. He is currently a professor of Literature and Writing at UCSD. Mahin Ibrahim is a writer based in Los Angeles whose work has appeared in HuffPost as a contributor, Narratively, and Amaliah. She started her career in tech and works in digital entertainment. Connect with her @mahinsays on Twitter. Blair Imani is a writer, mental health advocate, public speaker, and historian living at the intersections of Black, Queer, and Muslim identity. Blair is the author of Modern HERstory: Stories of Women and Nonbinary People Rewriting History and a book about the Great Migration which hits shelves in January 2020. She is also the official ambassador of Muslims for Progressive Values, one of the oldest progressive Muslim organizations to support the LGBTQ+ community. Imani has been featured in Essence, Out Magazine, Them, Broadly, and more. |
