Hands-On Genetic Modification
Our First-Ever Summer Bio Lab Workshop Series!
Experience the day-to-day activities of scientists in a laboratory setting while learning cutting-edge gene editing techniques through hands-on experimentation! Over the course of seven experiments, participants will gain experience working with bacteria and manipulating DNA while learning the fundamentals of genetic and molecular biology.
Attending all seven workshops is not required—you can sign up for as many workshops as you’d like!
For ages 12+ (adults are encouraged to attend with their children).
Limit 20 participants per workshop.
- Workshop #1: Streaking Bacteria - Saturday, June 15 from 3-5pm
Explore the bacteria around you by taking samples from everyday objects and watch them grow! Click here to register for Workshop #1. - Workshop #2: Colony PCR - Saturday, June 22 from 3-5pm
Amplify DNA directly from bacterial colonies with polymerase chain reaction (PCR). Click here to register for Workshop #2. - Workshop #3: Agarose Gel Electrophoresis - Saturday, June 29 from 3-5pm
Separate and analyze DNA fragments in an electric field. Click here to register for Workshop #3 - Workshop #4: "Stitching" DNA - Saturday, July 6 from 3-5pm
Combine DNA from two different sources to create a new genetic construct. Register for Workshop #4 below. - Workshop #5: "Snipping" DNA - Saturday, July 13 from 3-5pm
Digest DNA with "molecular scissors" and observe the change in size on an agarose gel. Click here to register for Workshop #5. - Workshop #6: Genetic Transformation - Saturday, July 20 from 3-5pm
Introduce the green fluorescent protein (GFP) into bacteria to make them glow! Click here to register for Workshop #6. - Workshop #7: Genetic Modifications - Saturday, July 27 from 3-5pm
Observe and explore the genetically modified bacteria. Click here to register for Workshop #7.
