Now in its 14th year, the Kick the Flu Summit will convene medical, health, and community service providers from both public and private sectors to share information, collaborate, and strategize about how to promote and increase the rate of flu immunizations throughout San Diego County during the 2018-19 influenza season. The Summit is presented by the San Diego Immunization Coalition (SDIC), a community group that consists of nearly 960 individuals from over 150 partner organizations working together to identify and develop approaches to raise immunization coverage for all residents of the region.
Because of the severe flu season last year, we encourage as many health care and social service providers to attend. An epidemiological report will be given about the 2017-18 influenza season, as well as the flu products available for the upcoming season.
The Kick the Flu Summit 2018 is also the perfect opportunity to attend a once-in-a-lifetime event: the 100-year anniversary of the historic 1918 Spanish flu pandemic. Our keynote speaker is Barbara Jester, RN, MSN, Preparedness Portfolio Manager for the Influenza Division at the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Ms. Jester will guide participants through the events of the 1918 world crisis that infected 500 million people, highlighting medical, social, and military elements of the day contributing to the situation. She will also summarize public health lessons learned from the pandemic and how the 1918 virus contributed to subsequent pandemics of the 20th and 21st centuries.
