Program Description

Event Details

Sunday, September 17th at 2PM and Monday, September 18th at 6PM the La Jolla Theatre Ensemble will present a staged reading of DRIVING MISS DAISY by Alfred Uhry, directed by John Tessmer and starring Roberta Wolff and Ernie McCray.

The Pulitzer Prize-winning play is set in Atlanta and spans a quarter of a century, from 1948 to 1973.

When a stubborn, elderly widow crashes her new car into the neighbor’s garage, her son hires her a chauffeur, much to Daisy Werthan's consternation.  Initially she refuses to rely on a Hoke Coleburn, a black man; but, gradually, her prejudices are broken down, and they become close friends.

Uhry’s poignant drama explores our common humanity and the aging experience as the world moves unrelentingly forward.
