Diego Guerra, faculty violist with the music education organization Villa Musica, will be visiting to perform a concert of Bach suites and more classical viola repertoire.
Diego Guerra of Monterrey, Mexico, is a violist, violinist, and conductor based in California. He is currently pursuing a Bachelor of Music degree in viola performance with Travis Maril at San Diego State University. Guerra has played with and led viola sections of the City Ballet Orchestra of San Diego, Opera de Tijuana in Mexico, the American Youth Symphony, and the San Diego Youth Symphony, including their China tour in 2015. On the podium, he has been a guest conductor with the Denver Philharmonic, Fort Wayne Philharmonic, San Diego City Ballet Orchestra, Pacific Lyric Association Opera, and Tifereth Israel Community Orchestra, among others. As part of his duties at SDSU, he had his opera debut in the Fall of 2017 with a production of Massenet’s “Cendrillon” and a performance of the Orpheus operas of Peri and Gluck in 2020.
As a teacher, Guerra is a frequent guest conductor and coach with the East County Youth Symphony and San Diego School for the Creative and Performing Arts, helping with students of all ages and backgrounds. Outside of music, he has worked with emergency government shelters to support underage, unaccompanied migrants from Central America, helping them transition to life in the US and helping connect them with their families in their new homes.
