Come listen to traditional mbira music of the Shona people with Lewis Peterman! The mbira is a hand-held musical instrument that evolved in sub-Saharan Africa. In its many different forms, it is capable of producing both intimate singable melodies for meditation and vigorous percussive rhythms for dance. Lewis Peterman is the past director of musicology and ethnomusicology in The School of Music and Dance at San Diego State University and the current President of the Center for World Music. He performs both early European music on period instruments and mbira music from Zimbabwe.
