Fanny Elisabeth Wooden Garvey is descended from two 19th century “pioneer” black families of San Diego. She received a Master of Arts in Renaissance Studies from the University of Sussex in Brighton, England, in 1999 and has lived in England, Ireland, Jamaica and Mexico, as well as travelled extensively. Professionally she has worked as an English teacher and a drama-therapy theatre practitioner. Some of her creative work has won awards, including the 1999 Alan Bennett playwriting award, which provided a grant to stage her play The Tragedy of Alba-Eire-Africa in America in venues in England. She also participated in the staging of the Southwark Mysteries, a social history play that was staged at the Old Globe Theatre in London as part of the String of Pearls Millennium celebration in 2000.  Upon retiring in 2014, she has devoted her leisure time to researching San Diego history, with a particular interest in its social history.

The San Diego City Clerk's Office is celebrating archives month all throughout October with a series of lectures at San Diego Central Library and an exhibit on display at the City Administration Building.
