Program Description

Event Details

Loosely based on the playwright's first night homeless on the streets of Los Angeles and Santa Monica, Shelter was developed at Diversionary Theatre's WordPlay Tuesdays Developmental Workshop and Scripteasers San Diego Playwrights Development.  Characters include a middle class, middle-aged homeless woman named DAVINA GREY and her encounters with several nocturnal nomads, including BIPOLAR VATO, 11-and-a-half-year-old LAZ-R-US, fairy godmother ESSENCE OF WHOOPI GOLDBERG, and ex-bluesman THREE-TIME WILLIE SIMS.

In 2017, Shelter premiered at the San Diego International Fringe Festival.  In 2019, Shelter ran for five performances at the San Diego International Fringe Festival.  It earned the Outstanding Solo Performance award, it was a San Diego Union-Tribune Critic's Choice and KPBSs Top Ten Fringe Pick.  The show is scheduled to run at the Stockholm Fringe Festival later this year.  Shelter is written, directed, and performed by Renée Westbrook.
