Mountains to Sea
June 24– August 26, 2024
“Mountains to Sea” is an exhibit of paintings which raises awareness about ongoing restoration projects for the San Diego River watershed. Located in the middle of urban development, the San Diego River watershed stretches from the Cuyamaca Mountains to the sea at Ocean Beach. Urban development has diminished the plant and wildlife diversity and quality by disconnecting and isolating significant ecological zones. The artist Laura Green would like viewers to imagine a future where humans and nature co-exist and examine their own personal relationship to nature.
Physical well-being is inextricably linked to clean air and fresh water. Human health also requires natural spaces for recreation and enjoyment. Historically disadvantaged communities typically have a disproportionate lack of access to natural open space and recreational facilities. Sadly, many children grow up without access to nature, and they never the chance to climb trees or view wild animals. Children need access to nature as it helps to deepen their understanding of humanity’s place in the ecosystem. The exhibit visualizes a potential future that can come from continued restoration efforts and equitable access to natural areas.
