Myths & Legends: A Collection of 6 Drawings

August 7– September 30, 2023

Derek Piehl is a contemporary American artist, born and raised in Southern California. He has developed an innovative method of meticulously drawing images by hand and digitally adding color to them in order to acquire the intensity of expression. He focuses on mythology, with collection themes centering on mythical creatures and heroes, fantastic beasts, and animals. The artist’s unique style draws inspiration from the Indigenous Australian art, with its dreamtime stories and dot painting as well as the heightened use of color of post-impressionism, through playing with geometric, distorted forms, and using hues not found in nature. His drawings tell familiar stories from the past, viewed through a kaleidoscope of colors mixed with the artist’s imagination.
