Event Details

When art student Noriko moved to Manhattan in 1969 and met avant-garde painter Ushio Shinohara, it was love at first sight. Trouble is, her new husband (whose paintings are created by him dipping boxing gloves in paint and then assaulting his canvas) demanded she give up her own art and become completely subservient to him and his work. Nearly 50 years later as Shinohara enters his twilight years, his once bright star has faded ... and Noriko's is on the rise. The couple's chaotic relationship is portrayed through Noriko's autobiographical comic strip "Cutie and Bullie," which gives voice to her decades of suffering. "Cutie and the Boxer" is an engrossing portrait of two individuals with distinctly different approaches to their individual aesthetic aspirations ... and a love story that transcends all expectations.
