In honor of Banned Books Week, come watch the 1939 adaptation of L. Frank Baum's classic novel: "The Wizard of Oz." This cinematic classic tells the story of a young farm girl and her little dog who are magically transported into the enchanted land of Oz via a Kansas tornado. As they travel down Oz's Yellow Brick Road to find the Wizard and ask him to send them home, they encounter a wonderful, funny, terrifying and, ultimately, enlightening group of characters, human and otherwise. Starring Judy Garland, Ray Bolger, Jack Haley, Bert Lahr, and Margaret Hamilton. [1939 | Rated G | 101 minutes]
The Wizard of Oz has been challenged many times over the years. Reasons why people have tried to censor it include general claims that the book contains no value for readers, concerns that animals were given human characteristics, complaints regarding a strong female main character, and even that the inclusion of a good witch is theologically impossible because witchcraft is bad. Celebrate your freedom to read (and view) The Wizard of Oz.
