What does it mean to experience adolescence as an adult when decades of life experience are in constant tension with the “lessons” being taught to fashion an independent, individual self? This experience is all too familiar for adults who transition sex and gender in today’s world.

Registration encouraged. Please scroll down to register.

In celebration of Star Trek Day, UCSD doctoral scholar Nicoletta Vangelisti explores the connections between Seven of Nine’s struggle after her separation from the Borg to find her place within Starfleet and Federation society and ideology and her own journey of transition at the age of 40. Both stories center the role of mothers, labor, emotions, and self-discovery.

Vangelisti is an alternative independent film and media producer and a PhD candidate in Communication at the University of California San Diego. She is a lifelong Trekkie who is repeatedly caught citing Star Trek in reference to utopian futures, along with a healthy amount of critique necessary for a good argument to emerge.
