Join Grandpa Grumpy and his guest here at the San Ysidro Library for a special bilingual KAMISHIBAI (STORYBOX) program! In this Japanese storytelling tradition, a professional storyteller or two reveal a series of illustrations as the narrative unfolds.
Presented "in tandem" with the two actors alternating between Spanish and English, our storytellers will share 3 stories: How the Rainbow was Made, A Very Special Friend, and The Boy and the Jaguar...that beautifully celebrate Latinx Heritage Month!
The Boy and the Jaguar (a little boy is the only one who can resolve a problem that is upsetting his entire village) and A Very Special Friend (a retired man who retires to an island off the coast of Brazil befriends an Arctic Penguin who visits him annually). Both of these stories were adapted and illustrated for kamishibai by a Brazilian citizen of Japanese descent named Yumi Izuyama.
