Event Details

This is an in-person, outdoor event at the San Diego Central Library. Masks are required and social distancing protocols will be followed. You may also join us virtually on the 2nd Tuesday of each month hosted by the Rancho Peňasquitos Library: REGISTER HERE

During the pandemic, it felt as if the world went digital all at once, but San Diego Public Library would like to invite you to switch gears back into the analog world of handwriting as we begin hosting in-person programming once again. We will be hosting Christian Michaels from The Writing Den as he facilitates a small group in chatting, writing, and sharing what's on your mind as you put pens to paper. The Writing Den is a nonprofit organization that helps those in need create, communicate, and connect through the power of handwriting.

As part of our launch, we will be taking a brief tour of The Rebellious Miss Breed exhibition in the art gallery on the 9th floor. "Miss Breed herself maintained an active correspondence with dozens of Japanese American children, sending them books, personal items, and messages of support and encouragement. Their letters back to her—hundreds of which have been collected and digitized by the Japanese American National Museum—offer a child’s-eye view of the internment experience and are a testament to Breed’s remarkable integrity, public spirit, and devotion to her diverse library community." We believe that these exhibits perfectly encapsulate the significance of this program, and we hope the messages in our Letter Project will inspire you to create your own significance via the written word.

Prompts, supplies, and stamps as well as support will be provided by staff.
