Description of Event
A backpacker for over 50 years, Barney "Scout" Mann will introduce his new book, The Continental Divide Trail: Exploring America's Ridgeline Trail and provide an update of National Trails advocacy.
In 2007, Mann and his wife Sandy thru-hiked (that is, they did it
end-to-end in one hiking season) the Pacific Crest Trail. Over five months, they walked a
continuous line from Mexico to Canada, 2,650 miles. Since then, Mann has thru-hiked
the Continental Divide Trail, traversing the Rocky Mountain spine for 2,700 miles, and
last year at age 66, he thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail.
The number of “Triple Crowners” are fewer than those who have flown in space.
Mann is the past Chair of the Pacific Crest Trail Association, sits on the Board of the
Continental Divide Trail Coalition and was just elected President of the Partnership for
the National Trails System, representing over thirty national trails groups with 150,000
members. The proceeds from his books benefit both trail non-profits. His articles have
been published in Backpacker magazine, the Portland Oregonian and the New York
Times (online). The New York Times called Mann “the informal historian of the trail”
and Backpacker magazine call him “a geek for trail history.”
Humorous and informative, Mann is sure to delight anyone interested in the great outdoors.
