Weekly readings of favorite classic and modern short stories selected by library staff performed by Write Out Loud professional actors. Part of WOL’s popular reading performance program Listen to This where new stories are released daily for the community to enjoy.

Listen to "Gorilla, My Love" by Toni Cade Bambara, performed by Brittney Caldwell

Gorilla, My Love is recommended by Marc Chery at the Central Library. "This story of a young girl who experiences adult doublespeak for the first time is one of my favorite pieces of writing. It's the title story in the collection of the same name, published in 1972, widely praised for her ability to capture the authentic sounds of adolescence and of African American voices. Read a copy here and listen to Marc talk about why he recommended it.

In addition to Gorilla, My Love, Bambara is the author of several story collections and novels. In 1970, she published The Black Woman, the groundbreaking anthology of essays, poems, and stories by a chorus of outspoken women that was one of the first of its kind. Get more on Bambara.

Write Out Loud was founded in 2007 with a commitment to inspire, challenge and entertain by reading literature aloud to audiences.  Join their international listenership and receive your free daily story.
