Event Details

In celebration of the 2021 One Book One San Diego adult title selection Being Heumann by Judith Heumann, our exhibit "Patient No More" explores the history of disability civil rights and the fight for section 504 legislation. Exploring intersecting conversations on disability rights, the arts, education, and social justice, Patient No More tells the story of people with disabilities deserving of civil rights and fighting against the "medical model" of disability which labeled them as "patients" who can be fixed through medical interventions.

Patient No More: People with Disabilities Securing Civil Rights is presented by the Paul K. Longmore Institute on Disability at San Francisco State University, made possible with support from California Humanities, and traveled by Exhibit Envoy. Learn more about the exhibit and the history of the 504 protests at patientnomore.org.
