Please join us for a special afternoon presenting local author Dean Calbreath and his featured book, The Sergeant, which tells the incredible but true story of an African born sergeant in the U.S. Civil War. After being captured by Tuareg raiders when he was in his early teens, he was sold into slavery - first in Libya, then in Turkey - before being purchased and freed by the Russian ambassador to Istanbul. Throughout the 1850s, Said journeyed through much of the Middle East and Europe before winding up in the United States on the eve of the Civil War. After joining the Union Army, he served as a sergeant in the Carolinas, Georgia and Florida.

As a journalist specializing in business, the economy and international affairs, Dean Calbreath has won dozens of  awards, including being part of a three-person team that won both the Pulitzer and Polk awards for uncovering the largest individual bribery case in Congressional history.

Author of the Month is a project of the Friends of San Diego Central Library in which local authors are featured monthly. HELP the Friends to support the Library and become a member.
