Author, Sandra Bonura, will discuss her book, Empire Builder, which is the story of a pioneer who almost single-handedly transformed the bankrupt village of San Diego into a thriving city. John D. Spreckels arrived in San Diego in 1887 and within a few short years he owned and controlled the majority of the local industry. Spreckels built empires in sugar, shipping and transportation and contributed to numerous educational, charitable, and cultural institutions around San Diego. Join us for a behind-the-scenes look at Spreckels and his family’s role in shaping San Diego.
