January selected title: Gilgamesh, an epic from ancient Mesopotamia that has been called “mankind’s first story.” Based on the life of Gilgamesh, King of Uruk, the epic was first written down in the now extinct Akkadian language on clay tablets in cuneiform by the Sumerians about 2100 BCE. Themes include life, death, friendship, immortality. Read any edition, in verse or prose.
