Join us for the Pacific Beach Library's monthly book discussion! On August 10th we will discuss Other Minds: The Octopus, the Sea, and the Deep Origins of Consciousness by Peter Godfrey-Smith.
Description: This book is a treatise on the evolution and nature of consciousness. It compares the situation in cephalopods, especially octopuses and cuttlefish, with that in mammals and birds. Complex active bodies that enable and perhaps require a measure of intelligence have evolved three times, in arthropods, cephalopods, and vertebrates. The book reflects on the nature of cephalopod intelligence in particular, constrained by their short lifespan, and embodied in large part in their partly autonomous arms which contain more nerve cells than their brains.
If you'd like to check out a print copy of the book, they are available 1 month before each discussion at the Pacific Beach Library's Circulation Desk. Please call 858-581-9934 x0 before coming to pick it up so that staff may confirm availability.
You can choose whether you'd prefer to attend the meeting in the PB Library's Community Room or join the discussion via Zoom. To get the Zoom login info for 2023, please either register to attend this program or send an email to cwainwright@sandiego.gov.
