Did you know that spending just 5 minutes with a dog can lower your stress and cortisol levels? The SD Fire-Rescue's facility dogs will be visiting the Central Library on October 25th to help patrons learn about how dogs can aid in stress relief (while providing hands-on proof!). These certified crisis dogs and their handlers are trained to recognize stress in humans and provide comfort in a safe, compassionate, and fluffy manner.
The Crisis Response Canine Program is an incredible asset within the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department. Not only are the Crisis Response Canines requested for particularly difficult and tragic events, but also are a joy to have included at ceremonies and community events. This thriving program continues to be beneficial and accessible in providing emotional care to San Diego Fire-Rescue employees (both sworn and non-sworn), their families, fellow fire and police agencies (mutual aid), and the community. Their chaplain handlers go above and beyond in their time, energy, and efforts to share them as the need for dogs arises. The ever-growing need for Crisis Response Canines proves the success of the program and the overarching goal of the Behavioral Wellness Unit of the San Diego Fire-Rescue Department to continue to strive for new and personal ways to provide and support our department.
