Program Description

Event Details

This two-day participatory workshop will be held on April 14 and April 15, from 2-6pm at the City Heights Performance Annex, 3795 Fairmount Avenue, San Diego 92105 (just steps from the back of the Library.)

While the emphasis is on community building and personal inquiry through shared mask-making, we trace the origins of masks through cultures from ancient to contemporary through touchable exhibits, slides, commentary and reflection.

Our goal for day one is to work with partners to create the foundation of a wearable mask, made from plaster bandages formed to our faces. This mode of construction, requiring the multi-layering of materials on each other’s faces, asks for trust and dialogue.

The collective internal inquiry is to discover and represent what we aspire to become and embody.

During day two, we will enhance the foundation mask from day one,  revealing a character based on a personal or universal myth.  Provided materials will allow participants to create ornamental features for their masks. Teaching artists will be on hand to guide the process and assist in any way.

Explore Your Myth Mask-making Workshop is free of charge to the public.  Ages 15 and up are welcome.   All materials will be supplied.   It is possible to take one day’s workshop, although participation in two days is encouraged.

Workshop facilitators are Nigel Brookes and Mindy Donner.
