Event Details

Do you love reading action-packed myths of heroes, quests, monsters, and villains? Do you dream of writing and illustrating your own mythical stories? Then this workshop is for you.

Join us for this three-part series focused on mythology! First, register below and then pick up your free copy of the book Mythology: Timeless Tales of Gods and Heroes by Edith Hamilton from the Mission Valley Library. You may read any myth(s) you like, but be sure to look through the recommended reading list to prepare for our first session. Participants should be ready to come to all three of the following classes

April 15: What Makes a Myth? Book Discussion

Together we'll discuss some of the stories from Edith Hamilton's Mythology and outline the “ingredients” of a myth.

April 22: Write Your Own Myth

Working with a Teaching Artist, participants will outline a short myth based on their own experiences or ideas. Everyone will have the opportunity to write, read, and receive constructive feedback.

April 29: Illustrate Your Myth

Working with a Visual Artist, participants will select one or more moments from their original myth to illustrate. A brief drawing lesson will be included, as well as time to plan and create your own illustration.

All workshops will take place on Mondays from 4:00–5:15 p.m and will be led by teachers from the non-profit organization Write Out Loud. This series is part of the annual NEA Big Read: Read! Imagine! Create! Recommended for ages 9-14.

Supported by: Audrey S. Geisel San Diego Foundation/Dr. Seuss Fund; National Endowment for the Arts; San Diego Commission for the Arts; San Diego Public Library; The County of San Diego; and Write Out Loud.

Note: This is the second class of a three-class series. To register, please visit the mythology program listed on April 15.
